The main objective of playing poker is to have the best possible hand. This is not always a guarantee. Although the highest hand is awarded the pot, there are several reasons why a lower hand can still win. Players can bluff, or try to trick other players into thinking they have a better hand. If they are able to do this, they can win the pot.
To play, players buy chips of the same value. A dark chip is worth two, four, or five reds, while a white chip is worth ten, twenty, or twenty-five whites. Generally, the lowest-valued chip is the blue one.
The first player in a poker game will be the one to make the initial bet. After the first bet, the dealer shuffles the cards, then deals the cards to each player, one at a time. The deal is interrupted for a betting interval. Each player must then match the bet by placing the same number of chips in the pot. This is called a forced bet.

A kitty is a special fund created for all the players. The kitty is used to pay for new decks of cards. It is also divided among the players who are still in the game. When a player leaves the game before the end, he or she is not entitled to a share of the kitty.
